MÉRIDA
When the Bici Ruta takes place, the authorities close the streets that lead to Plaza Grande and guide the traffic during the late morning hours. If you live in Merida, you have most likely heard of it. But do you know what the Bici Ruta is? It’s a cycling event that is held every Sunday starting in Paseo Montejo.
It started over a decade ago and it is such a great way to spend time and have fun with friends and family; It’s surrounded by monuments and sites with historical significance, so you can bike leisurely and enjoy the view. You can also get some real exercise by cycling fast from one end of the route to the other.
The streets are lined up with cafes and restaurants, so you can go eat with your friends afterward without having to order a taxi or drive in the afternoon traffic. It’s very popular and you don’t need to own a bike to participate in it, since people have made a business out of renting all kinds of bikes to people that don’t have their own.
There are regular bikes that cost about 40 pesos an hour, as well as bikes
with multiple seats, carries, and even carriages with sun shades on them
attached to bikes! If you want the full Merida experience, it’s definitely
a thing you should add to your to-do list.
