Autism Awareness Day. By Lumi Tarhala.

 Autism Awareness Day

I think that talking about people who might not act in a way you'd expect, because of a condition, is incredibly important, because it helps with future and past interactions with them and it makes it easier for people to understand each other. When someone can explain someone else’s actions, it's easier to respond to them.

Talking about autism and having a day dedicated to it is a good thing, because it helps everybody understand the ways in which they might act and react in different situations and when the other person is familiar with the psychological reasons behind the act, they won’t be weirded out or caught of guard by it, and it will be easier for both or all parties to move on from the interactions.

Some people confuse awareness days with celebrations and feel that it’s unfair or unnecessary to have these days, but I think that they’re just confused. Talking about something isn't the same as encouraging it and a diagnosis doesn’t make the condition. Of course people act differently depending on their experiences and everyone is unique, but there isn’t a particular need to teach about everything others might do differently. However, it’s good to teach and bring awareness to specific conditions that are stigmatized, to make the point that people are different, but equally worthy of respect, decency, kindness and opportunities.

In the end, making everybody aware and accepting of one condition will make them more open to understanding and learning about the behavior of the people around them, and that benefits everybody.

Dawn Syndrome Day. By Lumi Tarhala.

On Thursday of this week, we will welcome a new student, Jake, who is 13 years old and will become a part of the class of 1b.

 The Classroom Times

The school was given information about Jake by him and his family in an interview. He loves going to school and learning new things. He isn't keen on running laps and hopes the gym teacher won’t make the class do them.

He likes handball and will join the school's handball team and the optional music class for advanced musicians.

Jake's parents hope that we welcome him with open arms and make him feel a part of the school as that wasn’t quite the case in his last school. Jake has Down syndrome, which can make students and school faculty unsure of how to interact with him, but Jake assured us that we don’t need to treat him any differently than we would treat some other friend.

On occasions, he hopes that people will be patient and understanding with him. But remember guys, that's how we should treat each other regardless of someone's background or condition.

We will get to know him when he joins their class on Thursday, and the other students will certainly get the chance to meet him during recess. Don’t be shy and go up to him to introduce yourself!

 DOWN´S SYNDROME DAY

Pepe is the best soccer player, he knows a lot of skills, and he is a new student in

the school and he has Down syndrome, but he seems to not have it because

he is outstanding in physics.

He is one of my best friends, he just wants to be treated like you.

“HE JUST WANTS TO BE TREATED LIKE YOU WOULD LIKE”

Does everyone really have the same 24 hours?. By Lumi Tarhala.

Does everyone really have the same 24 hours?

I think most of us have heard or even used the phrase “We all have the same 24 hours.” If you, however, have not, I would define it as a phrase that is used to encourage or shame people for not doing things that are considered healthy for a person, like going to the gym, picking up a hobby, or eating at home-cooked meals. Under the assumption that the person is choosing not to do so or doesn't consider it a high-enough priority to spend time on, because they are lazy or don’t plan ahead.

Firstly, I think that the phrase and way of thinking come from an incredibly privileged point of view and don’t take into consideration the fact that the same choice can be much harder for other people since some people have more time-consuming responsibilities than others, which gives them less disposable time and energy. For example, a single parent with a full-time job doesn’t have as much time for themselves to do as they choose, as a child-free, 40-something-year-old who retired early. One of them can most likely go to the gym everyday guilt-free, while the other has the restrictions of a work schedule and a child's needs to consider.

One of the things that, in my opinion, most affects the amount of free time that someone has on their hands is, of course, money. One of the few popular sayings that are actually true happens to be “Time is money”. It also works in reverse, making it so that the more money someone has, the less of their own time they need to use for “inconveniences”, like washing the dishes, watching their small child, sweeping the floor, or cooking. All things that you can hire someone to do for you, if you can afford it, of course.

There are many other reasons why doing something that others do with ease can be hard for some people. Many people with disabilities struggle with exercise, because of whatever limitations they have. While you may buy all your food from the farmers market, it would be much harder to do for someone who lives in a place that doesn’t have one, so the area or country that someone lives in also has an impact on the choices people make.

Some people think that it’s still a matter of priority and that if a person wanted to do something enough, they would. Which is partially true. But staying in shape or eating organic food can come with huge sacrifices to a person and it’s not fair to imply that someone prioritizing sleeping or taking care of their child, means that they don’t have the right priorities. That only leads to these people wearing themselves out by trying to bite more than they can chew. And that wouldn’t just affect the person, but the people around them and the public, too. For example, if someone exercises, on top of their other responsibilities, leading to them not getting enough sleep, it could be considered an issue of public safety, if they were to drive their child to school, as driving while exhausted can be as dangerous as driving under influence of alcohol.

In conclusion, I consider using the phrase ignorant, as well as rude. Because it ignores the sometimes-unimaginable differences between people and people’s lives and reduces the unique circumstances of an individual's life, to that individual's own choices.

Is Real Madrid the Best Team? By Emiliano Leal Peraza.

 OPINION ESSAY

IS REAL MADRID THE BEST TEAM?

Nowadays, many people think that Barcelona is better than Real Madrid, but

they don'tremember that Real Madrid has 14 Champions League.

First of all, I think that Barcelona is not a bad team, they are good but they

cannot be compared with Real Madrid simply because the players don't have

the same level, Barcelona was good many years ago, but nowadays they are

bad.

In addition, Real Madrid is always in the big tournaments and at the top of

the League, they have something special that not all the teams have.

In conclusion, Barcelona is a team with good players, but Real Madrid was, is

and will be better than Barcelona.

A World without Social Media. by Lumi Tarhala.

 A World without Social Media                                 Lumi Tarhala - 3A - 2024

Social media is a big part of everyone's lives, including mine, and has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s easy to compare the world with social media to one without it since it has only been around for a bit more than a decade. I conclude that people lived just fine before it, but I don’t think I could learn as many new things as I currently do, if I didn’t have social media or if it didn’t exist at all.

It’s an efficient way to gain, as well as search for, information. Some people criticize getting information from social media and claim that the information is unreliable. However, I think the same thing can be said about all media, since all of it, books, news articles, letters, etc., are made by a person, or people, with a goal or an agenda in mind. Or by someone who does not fully comprehend the topic they’re talking about.  Personally, I’m on social media a lot and I get a lot of my information from there, so not having access to it would mean that I’d be unaware of the things going on beyond my active circle of family, friends and associates, and I wouldn’t be able to form my own opinions about a relevant topic, before everyone around me already knows about it. That could mean that I’d use more of my energy to focus on the events going on in my own life, but I’d have nothing equal to compare my life to, since social media is a place where I learn about other people’s lives. Therefore, I would be unsure of if my life is going as, it should be, and I’d also have a harder time understanding and dealing with different situations.

Social media itself drives an agenda, the one that the owners of the companies have, which is to get people to use their apps as often and as much as possible. This leads to the most popular and talked about subjects to be ones that rile up people. I think it’s good to be passionate about things that you believe in, but social media has a tendency to create things to argue about and then escalate a small argument to be about the moral failings of the other side. Usually, I don’t engage in discourse by commenting or posting about it, but I do follow them and try to think critically about why people care in the first place. Since I’m not that tied up in it, I think I could go (and have gone) a few weeks without social media.

Social media by itself isn’t bad, but everything is bad if you overdo it. Overall, the best thing you can do is think about why a topic is being discussed before taking the arguments people make to heart.

A World Without Social Media. By Emiliano Leal Peraza.

 A WORLD WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA

For me, it would be very difficult to be without social media, the advantages

would be that you could feel free without them, because many times the

social media are kind of toxic and have a lot of fake news.

I would miss talking with my group of Friends, watching YouTube and

Instagram, I think I could be like 2 or 3 days without social media.
